2.9 Objectives for the BMW Region

The above analysis of the comparative position of the BMW region and the key determinants of sustained economic performance show the distinctive development challenges facing the region. In summary, the challenges and objectives for the region are as follows

  • increase the presence in the region of the key drivers of sustainable economic growth, notably in the productive sector
  • improve the quality of the region’s economic and social infrastructure and human resources
  • build on the region’s natural resource base especially in the areas of agriculture, tourism, the seafood sector and rural enterprise
  • increase the potential of the region to act as a counterbalance to the S&E region, especially Dublin, and pursue more balanced and sustainable growth within the region
  • promote rural and urban social inclusion.

Success on all these fronts is essential if the drive to strengthen population structure, to promote development throughout the BMW region and to attract higher income earners to live and work in the region is to be successful. The Measures in the BMW Regional OP, which will complement the major projects in the Inter-Regional OPs, are designed to support the achievement of these ends.
