Councillor Joe Flanagan Chairman of the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly presented students of Moate Community School at an awards presentation in the school on 17th December, with various prizes which they won for their participation in the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly Online Quiz. The quiz which was run over four weeks encourages students to develop an understanding of the role and functions of the Assembly.

Speaking at the presentation Mr Kevin Duffy, Principal, Moate Community School said he was delighted that the school was chosen as a pilot to launch the quiz and thanked Cllr Flanagan in this regard. Mr Duffy also said that he himself learned quite a lot about the role and functions of the Assembly and where E U funds are spent in Ireland and noted that a significant amount of EU funds was spent in funding research in the 3rd Level Institutions.

Councillor Flanagan said that over the past number of years, the BMW Regional Assembly had actively promoted awareness of regional issues and of the role played by the Regional Assembly and the Online Quiz was one means by which they did this. He stated that he was encouraged by the number of young people participating in the competition and said it was a novel way to encourage students to learn about Regional Government in Ireland and the significance of EU funding.
