Letterkenny Urban RegenerationGateways and Hub Towns Development Fund - Letterkenny: Urban Regeneration and Traffic Management

Part VIII approval was sought from the Letterkenny Town Council Members at the Council meeting on 10th May 2010.  The rollout of the project was delivered through a combination of direct labour by Town Council staff and private contractors.  Following receipt of tenders and tender assessment completion, the appointed contractor commenced works in September 2010 and completed the works in December 2010.

Phase I:

  • Installation of electronic parking guidance Information System to encourage and direct vehicles to (currently under-utilised) off-street car parks, including advisory and directional signage.
  • Installation of MOVA (an intelligent traffic control system), which will fully consider vehicular traffic, pedestrian and cyclist movements which will ultimately result in an improved junction performance.

Phase II:         

  • Upgrading of a pedestrian link from the Main Street to the off-street parking by placement of high quality paving, landscaping, street furniture, Letterkenny Urban Regenerationcanopies and placement of underground lighting and street lighting.

Phase III:

  • The main Street has been upgraded from the Courthouse Junction to The Square, by widening the footpaths to a minimum of 2 meters.
  • The works carried out include drainage, ducting, kerbing, the provision of high quality paved shared surface area on the east side of the street and Rosemount Lane, removing retaining kerbs to allow easy access across the carriageway, footpaths to the west have been refurbished through the provision of high quality paving, the provision of pedestrian crossings, cycle parking facilities and loading bays and the provision of decorative street furniture and landscaping and upgrading of street lighting.
